Johanna’s classes are grounded in concepts inspired by the teachings of Vanda Scaravelli, embodied anatomy, somatics and bio-mechanics. Instead of striving to achieve in postures, the practice is used to explore the relationships between support, release and patterns of tension and holding. All the while working for greater body awareness, efficient movement and alignment.
This beautifully simple approach to yoga explores the importance of being grounded in our bodies. With the feet rooting into the ground, a spine free from tension can extend fully, supporting the head and limbs to allow healthy, un-restrictive movement. This emphasis on grounding and its effect on the body is explained succinctly by author Andrea Olsen (Body stories, A Guide to Experiential Anatomy).
“Connecting to the ground is step one, freeing inhibition in the spine step two, and then you breathe fully and deeply. You cannot think clearly with agitated breath, it is physiologically impossible, the body prioritizes oxygen over everything else. These three steps; ground, spine and breath allow you to focus your attention freshly and receive the ease of your creative thinking mind, and then the moment and all its possibilities are yours.”

“I enjoyed the Scaravelli teaching at your class and found it very beneficial to my practice. I have been doing yoga for 17 years and came to yoga through pranayama, I find the asanas a struggle at times but enjoy the benefits of being able to meditate in a deeper way. My old ankle injuries and clicking knees sometimes mean I am afraid to really bring my energy lower into my body. Your class allowed me to become settled into my ankles and my knees and to ground in a much deeper way than before. The effect on my postures was firming and empowering – I have not felt like this in the postures before and it is something that I will definitely continue to explore. Many thanks Johanna” JB
